By and large, the money related examinations should cover the initial five years of your program. The standard money related examinations are: Breakeven investigation. A breakeven investigation will show what number of assessments must be performed to take care of MRI program costs. The particular breakeven point is determined by separating the fixed costs, (for example, hardware, space, work force, upkeep, and utilities) by the installment per test short the variable costs, (for example, supplies, expenses, and charging costs) per test. It might turn out that your breakeven point is 1,000 tests, however your market investigation demonstrates interest for just 700 tests. For this situation, you might need to examine development patterns to decide when or whether your MRI program could earn back the original investment later on. You may likewise need to take a gander at rebuilding your proposed program to make it monetarily achievable. Degree of profitability (ROI). return for capital invested is one of the most widely recognized proportions of productivity and can show in the case of burning through cash on a MRI program is a decent utilization of your hospital’s assets. IRR (characterized as the pace of enthusiasm at which the gradual NPV of a proposition is zero) is another approach to take a gander at the estimation of a capital use †by taking a gander at the pace of profit for the speculation. On the off chance that a count shows that the IRR is over the expense of capital, the proposed speculation ought to be gainful. These two estimations help decide if the speculation is monetarily practical for the medical clinic. Once more, the data required for these investigations can be gotten from hardware sellers, business databases, and outside providers. Making the buy, be that as it may, would include the utilization of a lot of accessible money, which would then not, at this point be accessible to help different tasks or for future monetary needs. Renting. Renting moves a great part of the financing to your operational spending plan and limits credit necessities. Vol. 22, Iss. 1, p. 52-69,6-7 (20 pp.) | Abstract (Summary) Leaders continuously seek to improve organizational performance and enhance work group effectiveness to drive competitiveness and curtail the cost of employee turnover. The diversity of many work groups in the U.S. creates potential benefits and challenges for their leaders. Using data gathered from a manufacturing facility in southeastern U.S., this study examines how Path-Goal leadership styles, diversity, work group effectiveness, and work group members turnover intention are related.†¦show more content†¦When individuals interact with people whom they perceive as different, they tend to classify themselves and those people into social categories (Cox and Nkomo, 1990). Research has found that, early in the life of a work group, members focus on the visible aspects of diversity such as gender, race/ethnicity, and age. As group members interact, they redirect their attention to other members non-visible features such as personality, education, expertise, values, and communi cation styles (Cunningham and Sagas, 2004; Hobman et al., 2004, 2003; Salomon and Schork, 2003; Richard et al, 2002; Caudron, 1994). Employees with more perceived value/informational dissimilarity with their leaders tend to be less satisfied with them and have weaker organizational attachment that those with high perceived similarity (Lankau et al., 2007). Diverse work groups present their leaders with challenges and benefits. Among the challenges are potentially unfavorable interpersonal relationships, impeded intra-group communication, low group cohesiveness, and high employee turnover (Joplin and Daus, 1997; Schneider, 1987; Pfeffer, 1983). There are groups that operate only in growing and selling the product, and only groups that buy and distribute the drugs. In this essay I will discuss the similarities and differences of two of the largest growers and sellers in the drug trade: The Cali Cartel of Columbia and the Tijuana Cartel of Mexico. The Cali Cartels operations are made much easy because of warring paramilitary groups in Columbia. These groups protect the growers in their specific areas. If there were to be peace in Columbia and the two groups agree to a ceasefire, the growers would then be vulnerable to government intervention. In Mexico, the AFO thrives on the large number of corrupt Mexican officials. The cartel makes it a very smart choice for a government official or law enforcer to help them. Not only are they bribed, but they are also threatened with violence. Everyone in Mexico knows from the history of this group that they mean business and any threat is very legitimate. Because of the large amount of corruption in the Mexican government, the Tijuana cartel flourishes. Both of these cartels are custom made for the area they are located in. If the systems were to switch geographic locations, they would not b e nearly as successful. Over the years, the groups have molded to form the perfect fit for a drug cartel to operate in their specific area. As

Growing up Chicano and Chicana free essay sample

Overcoming obstacles In the book, Growing up Chicana/o, written by various authors, the characters from each story experience many situations where stereotypes that discriminate their race make their lives much more problematic. Even though these children are knocked down, all of them seem to get back up and become stronger, more mature people. Maturity was one of the most Important themes of this book. Racial stereotypes create obstacles for Chicana/o children in school or in extra curricular activities. The Chicana/o children in stories like, Eleven, The Scholarship Jacket, and Pocho all deal itch stereotypes that hurt or discriminate against them. In the story, The Scholarship Jacket by Marta Salina, Martha is a hardworking girl who Is thought of as not worthy for a prestigious award, due to the fact that she is Mexican. Martha had worked hard her entire life to earn an average of an A in every single one of her classes, but Martha being a different race created a barrier between her and finally receiving the scholarship Jacket that she deserved. This Is expressed when her teacher, Mr. Boone, says, Martha is do Mr Boone wanted to give the scholarship Jacket to a white girl named Joann, because her father was on the board of the school and owned a local store in town even though she didnt deserve it. Martha Is discriminated and thought of as a not worthy candidate for this prestigious award because of her ethnicity. The principal constructs a way to try and make Martha ineligible for the Jacket by informing her, This year the Board decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still wont cover the complete cost of the Jacket(129). This brings up another stereotype, that Mexicans are generally poor, that discriminates Martha. This new rule stops Martha from receiving the Jacket that she has earned. The stereotypes and assumption that she was poor was not fair to Martha, or the standards of the award. Martha showed the courage to ask her hardworking grandfather for the fifteen dollars and then tell the principle with dignity, that her grandfather will not be paying the money. This showed what a strong, mature person Martha was and no matter what obstacles were set in front of her, she would always stand up for herself because she knows that she deserved the ward. The principle realizes that she is the clear deserver of the Jacket and makes an executive decision and says, Okay damn it. Well make an exception in your case. Ill tell the board, youll get your In the end. her race was finally overlooked and she obtained the scholarship Jacket that she truly earned through all of her hard work throughout the years. In the story, Eleven by Sandra Cisneros, Rachel is singled out and thought to have owned a nasty, old, and tattered red sweater, because she is Mexican. which makes school extremely arduous for her. This rings up the stereotype that Mexicans are poor and wear old, tattered clothing. This is portrayed when the teacher asks whom the Jacket belongs to and Sylvia Salivar says, l think It belongs to 56). This shows that she thinks the sweater is Rachels Just because she believes in the stereotype that Mexicans wear old tattered clothing and are probably poor. This is very hard for Rachel to deal with because she is being wrongfully discriminated Just because she is Mexican. Rachel expresses how tOf2 from it as possible. I even move my chair a little to the right. Not mine, not mine, not mine. (1 58). This displays how much she hates being thought of as the owner of this sweater. Not only was a classmate discriminating her but her teacher as well. As her teacher saw Rachel trying to get as far away from this sweater as possible, she said, muffs put that sweater on right now and no more nonsense. (1 58). By her teacher saying this, it displays that she also believes that the sweater be longs to her Just because of her ethnicity. This is when Rachel finally breaks down and starts weeping n the middle of class, all because she was discriminated for being Mexican. By the end of this terrible experience for her, she gathers herself and then finally the true owner of the sweater is revealed. In the story, Pocho by Jos © Antonio, Richard is forced into fighting his friend Thomas in a boxing match, and then is asked to fight again by the pro boxer of the town to make money because he thinks he and his family are poor due to the fact that he is Mexican. This creates a substantial problem for Richard because he does not like to fight and is extremely uncomfortable with the hole situation. By the pro boxer assuming the Richard and his family need money, it brings up the stereotype that Mexicans are poor and work meaningless Jobs like gardening that dont pay well. This is displayed when the pro says to Richard, Mexicans dont get too much chance to amount to much. You wanna pick prunes the rest of your life? (168). This shows that the pro thinks that Mexicans cant amount to anything Just because they are Mexicans. The pro then announces to Richard that he is going to talk things over with his father, but then Richard shows his wit when he responds and says, miou dont know my old man. Hes already been in Jail for knifing three guys. (169). Richard is using the stereotype that Mexicans are associated with knifes to play with the pro because he knows that he is intellectually superior to the pro. I think Richard used this discrimination towards himself and other Mexicans to prove the pro wrong by showing that he was already smarter than him by the age of thirteen. This very much portrayed that he was mature and was not going to let anyone discriminate him, his family, or his race. In this novel, chicana/o children were discriminated, looked over, and singled out Just because of their race. These children had to face many obstacles because of racial stereotypes in and out of school. Each one of these children showed that no matter what obstacles due to their race were set in front of these children, they would find a way to overcome the challenges and become stronger and more mature people while doing it. These three stories really showed how important it is to be able to succeed in life even when there are obstacles blocking you from doing so.

Dark Overtones And Their Contrasts In My Antonia Essay Example For Students

Dark Overtones And Their Contrasts In My Antonia Essay Word Count: 1390Dark Overtones, and Their Contrasts in My AntoniaIn My Antonia by Willa Cather, there are many dark overtones that pervade the novel. It is through the use of symbolism and contrast these overtones are made real. The prairie is the predominant setting of the novel. It may be shaped, and it conforms to the desires of those working it. The prairie?s loneliness, shown by the wide open spaces, is a brilliant way of revealing internal conflict by using a setting. Also, it brings out the characters true meaning. Cather shows through the character of Lena Lengard that society?s next generation would not be as good, or quite as noble as that of Cather?s childhood. The primary inscription on the first page states that the best days are the first to flee. Cather contrasts these ideas with Antonia?s personality, which is always bright. This contributes to the dreariness of the novel. In the novel the prairie is a metaphor for internal conflict. Cather brilliantly demonstrates the prairie as a representation for internal conflict being portrayed by a setting (Kelley, Sean). It symbolizes loneliness and depression. When Jim, one of the main characters, was young, the prairie was uncultivated and there were not as many settlers; it was a lonely place. Being isolated from society with little or no human contact could drive anyone insane. Despair, bad luck, greed, and self-absorbtion make one lose hope also, but it is mostly the lack, or the underuse of, imagination (Kelley, Sean). The prairie was a desolate strip of land that continued as far as could be seen. In the beginning of the novel, Jim Burden states about the land: There seemed to be nothing to see, no fences, no creek or trees, no hills or fields. I had thefeeling that the world was left behind, that we had gone over the edge of it. If we never arrived anywhere, it did not matter. Between that earth, and th at sky, I felt erased, blotted out. (3 4) It seems that Jim tries to express that the prairie is forlorn, and deprived of life, making one aware of being alone. Because Jim has left behind all that is familiar, and started over his life, he has a clean slate, and that is what the prairie is. E. K. Brown, once wrote, ?The impersonal vastness of the land is the freedom it represents.? Thus, Jim makes his own destiny. At first, he is negatively affected by his isolation, since he has only one friend, Jake. When he finds other companions, like the Shimerdas, the land is no longer quite as lonesome. He takes on the point of view that life will work itself out on the prairie. With this view in mind he feels at one with the landscape. Jims childhood as Commager says, ?is flavored by the land?( 31:115-116). With so much solitude on the endless prairie, one can be lead to an alternative to rid oneself of suffering. A prime example of this would be Mr. Shimerda, Antonias father, who kills hi mself out of seclusion and also because of a loveless marriage. Slowly, these two things began to erase his personality, until there was so little left of him, he was a bare shadow of the prominent social figure that he had once been. He was finally driven to suicide. In My Antonia, there is the suggestion that the next generation will not be as gallant as the one Antonia lived in. Like Robert E. Scholes, many critics seem to agree that, ?There is the suggestion that the coming generations will be less heroic and more ordinary than the present breed.? (31:37) The rough experiences Antonia underwent molded who she is. She makes sacrifices so that her family can prosper, and her younger siblings can go to school, and thus have more ?options?.Henry Steele Commager wrote that to Jim it seems that the experiences have made the sacrificers stronger, and that it is actually the ones who have sacrificed who have more ?options?. Lena Lengard is a fundamental example of this. The situations t hat have shaped Antonia will not reoccur. Antonia looks to the future of her children, but Jim knows that the future will be, at the best, a poor imitation of the past. .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 , .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .postImageUrl , .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 , .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937:hover , .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937:visited , .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937:active { border:0!important; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937:active , .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937 .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u263f2b382a606ac626b1ced84b0a6937:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Gymnastics (790 words) EssayMuch like my latter point, the inscription on the title page from Virgils Aeneid is dark and symbolizes childhood lost. The inscription reads ?Optima diesprima fugit.? It means that the best days are the first to flee. Jims childhood days were his best. He discovers this conflict between the past and the present when he leaves Black Hawk for college in Lincoln. This is portrayed at the picnic scene in which it is clear that those are the last true days of carefree childhood for Antonia and Jim. As Wagenknecht says, Jim becomes more ?successful professionally, but more disappointed personally?(109), he returns to his hometown of Black Hawk to try to recapture some of his warm past. Jim feels that by playing with Antonias children, he is regaining his long since lost childhood. Commenting upon her own writing, Cather once said ?A book is made of ones own flesh and blood of years. It is cremated youth.? In addition to the prairie being a setting, it is a symbol for Antonia herself. From her clothing to her mannerisms, to her abundant family, Antonia embodies what we think of as a reflection of the land she herself tilled. Because Antonia returns to the prairie, explaining that she has done so because she favors the open land of the prairie to the commotion of city life, it is even more apparent that Antonia is one with the land. Antonia fulfills what we think of as good. To Henry Steele Commager, Antonia represents the human quest for beauty and truth. Antonia is love and despair, truth and beauty. (31:114) Antonia embodies the American values of personal strength, creative force, and essential goodness of the pioneer woman. She is energetic, intense and noble. Few characters bring all of those attributes together as well as Antonia. As one critic, John H. Randall III, has said, My Antonia ?shows fertility of both soil, and human being.? (31:35) The use of symbolism and contrast is a prominent literary device. Cather uses it to convey the deep and engrossing meanings of the shadowy overtones that run throughout the novel. The style Cather chose is a perplexing one; it shows the goodness and wholesomeness of the human condition, by using a dark setting, dark backgrounds, and mostly dark overtones. Her approach is very interesting and makes one wonder if My Antonia is a viable story and if it is an accurate portrayal of the human condition at that time. Although Jim is a young boy, he is not too perfect which makes him an interesting character. This seems to be an accurate representation of a human being. By making her characters imperfect, Cather creates a believable story. It is the dark overtones that hold together this novel about the goodness of life. Without Cather?s use of skillfully creating this paradox, the novel would have been quite different, and the meaning altogether changed. In the final analysis, the book seems to leave the reader asking: will the next generation be quite so dauntless as the one of the present? Work CitedScholes, Robert E. Learning How to Write a Successful Essay Using Ma Parcc

Learning How to Write a Successful Essay Using Ma ParccIn a recent study, the Margin for Error program developed by Marketing Systems and Solutions and their partner company in Oxford, MA called Ma Parcc Student made it to the top three of its peers on MarketMarks.com's Homework Charts category. The first in this 'The way it works is pretty simple. It is an essay that is sent out to students as a pre-term paper or an essay. Students in college, high school, and in university take it upon themselves to create their own story on a certain topic and then help complete the text using their own ideas and knowledge. They then send it out as a study guide or a 'sample essay.'As you can imagine, some students can have a lot of trouble with the word usage. Some students will make their topics sound quite complicated, while others will make them seem very simple. Not only that, but some students may even struggle to find the exact topic, due to a lot of conflicting topics that are being used. The key to avoiding these problems is to have an overall theme in mind before starting to write. There are times when students may make the task of choosing the appropriate topic very difficult, by making it seem as if the topic is too vague, and makes for an extremely hard paper. The exact opposite is true. It is easier to pick out the specific topic of the paper, and then choose a topic from there, without having to make the topic complicated. With the student in mind, it is much easier to come up with a new topic, than it is to come up with an original topic. For this reason, it is possible to use the same idea as a topic, without being lost in the shuffle. One tip to avoid the difficulty of the original topic is to start writing a theme. Come up with a way to go from your idea to a conclusion. Then after you've gotten everything you need for the conclusion into one article, you can turn it into a topic without worrying that your subject matter is not adequate.Even though the subjec t matter is fairly easy to choose, you must understand the other major skills required to study effectively and correctly when dealing with the Ma Parcc Student subject matter. With the specific topic in mind, and to avoid the other obstacles that could be encountered, the application of the three most critical skills for any successful student will be a step in the right direction. Those skills are research, writing, and critical thinking. Together, they make for a powerful combination when it comes to learning how to do homework in college or high school.

Your site name and description will stay the same. But there are some theme-specific pieces of content that wont necessarily make the journey when you change themes. These are things like:Theme-specific shortcodes. If youre using shortcodes that came with your theme (rather than a standalone shortcode plugin), those shortcodes will cease to function once you change themes.A theme-specific homepage. Some themes, like our Neve themes, come with special homepage sections that function outside the normal WordPress page system in order to offer more flexibility. The Legal Issues Scenarios Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The Legal Issues Scenarios - Case Study Example â€Å"Top off† social security and unemployment benefits arise in the case of Heinrich while in the case of Christine, discrimination in the selection, mandatory language tests and pension requirements are at issue. In the case of Max, the legal issue that arises is the right to equal access to loans for education, while in Klara’s case there may be the problem of sex discrimination. Additionally, legal issues connected to reasons for the proposed deportation of the family must also be taken into account. Article 18 of the EC Treaty allows the right to free movement of persons within the European Union, while Article 12 lays out a general principle of non-discriminatory conduct to be applied to all EU citizens. Directive 2004/38 has in fact expanded the scope of Article 12 and has put in place new provisions for the free movement of persons within the EU. Close has argued for supranational democratic citizenship for the European Union, on the basis that citizenship regulated by national considerations is undemocratic in its origin.1 The major issue that arises in the case of both Christine and Heinrich is the question of equal pay for equal work, which is mandated by Article 141 of the EC Treaty. However, before this aspect can be assessed, it must be determined whether they first qualify as â€Å"workers†. A general definition of worker has been set out in Lowrie Blum2 stating the essential feature that characterizes a worker is that â€Å"for a certain period of time a person performs services for and under the direction of another person for which he receives remuneration.† This will be applicable to Heinrich, Christine, and Klara who will all qualify as workers and will be entitled to a range of community rights applicable in all Member States3.

Annual Reports Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Annual Reports - Essay Example Such difference may arise from content organization of the major elements of an annual report or may be due to order of arrangement of the report’s sections. In content organization, and with major focus on presentation of financial items, the financial statements may be presented in either account form or in a report form. The major difference between the two forms is in their orientation. While the report format is horizontally presented, the account format is vertically presented. The financial statements can also be communicated in exact figures or round off figures. Similarly, a report can document each item of the financial statements or group items and present their cumulative values (Nikolai, Bazley and Jones, 2009). Reports may also vary in the order of presentation of the major elements such as financial statements, â€Å"management discussion and analysis,† â€Å"report on adequacy and internal control,† among other sections (Warren and Reeve, 2006, p. 681). A review of annual reports of McDonalds and Yum Brands communicates a number of differences in the organizations’ approach to communicating their annual reports. The first major difference is in the order of presentation of the reports sections. McDonalds’ annual report begins with management’s discussion and analysis of the corporation’s performance, both financial and operational. Presentation of financial statements that is facilitated by explanatory notes follows this before reports on the organization’s internal control system and reporting (McDonalds, 2011). Yum’s report however begins by presenting the annual meeting before accounting for the organization’s activities in which it presents financial statements. The reports’ outlines therefore communicate McDonalds focus on reporting its financial performance while Yum prioritizes information regarding its planned decisions on management and human resource. Reflection in Nursing Essay Example for Free

Reflection in Nursing Essay This assignment is a reflective account of events that arose for a nursing student during their first clinical placement in a community hospital. A brief definition of reflection will be given, with emphasis placed on communication. This reflection has been chosen to highlight the need for nurses to have therapeutic communication skills, to provide holistic care for those diagnosed with dysphasia or speech loss and the scope of learning opportunities it has provided to improve practice in this area. All names in this text have been changed, to respect the confidentiality of the patient and other healthcare professionals (NMC 2002). Reflection, in this instance, is a way of analysing past incidents to promote learning and improve safety, in the delivery of health care in practice. The Gibbs reflective cycle has been chosen as a framework for reflection (see appendix 1). Mr. Comer was admitted to his local community hospital for respite care. He has suffered multiple, acute strokes in the past, which has left him with severe disabilities. These include paralysis rendering him immobile, aphasia (speech loss) and dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). He relies on carers for all normal activities required for daily living (Roper et al 1996) and is advised to have a pureed diet and thickened fluids. My mentor asked me to observe her feeding Mr Comer. She had prepared my learning the week previously by providing literature on the subject of feeding elderly patients and discussion on safe practice for feeding patients with dysphagia. I was alarmed and unprepared for the physical sight of this patient, who was coughing noisily and laboriously and a thick, green stream of mucus was exuding from his mouth. I observed Mr. Comer being fed and noticed he was coughing more than normal during his meal, but was informed that this was quite normal for him. I was asked to feed him the next day. When I uncovered Mr Comer’s meal he started to cough in the same manner that I had witnessed before, but this time he evaded all eye contact. I was feeling extremely anxious, but proceeded to load a spoon with his meal. His coughing increased in intensity accompanied by rapid eye blinking, turning his head away from me and throaty groans that I can only describe as distressed vocal growling. I was terrified at this point and called for assistance, thinking Mr. Comer was having some kind of seizure. I discovered very quickly from another health carer who knew Mr. Comer well, that he was protesting profusely about the pureed dinner I was going to give him which he dislikes immensely. On the previous day, he had received an ordinary meal, mashed to a smooth consistency, which is what his carers provided for him at home. This experience left me feeling very uncomfortable and inadequate in my role. I tried to understand why he reacted so alarmingly by putting myself in his position. I felt anger and frustration, but more importantly the feeling of helplessness. Not being able to voice my dislike to the meal offered exacerbated the urgency of hunger or thirst. Although this experience was very frightening for me and frustrating for the patient, it has highlighted the need for me to improve my communication skills. NMC (2002) outlines that we must not add extra stress or discomfort to a patient by our actions and we must use our professional skills to identify patient’s â€Å"preferences regarding care†¦and the goals of the therapeutic relationshipâ€Å". Severtseen (1990) cited by Duxbury (2000) applies the term ‘therapeutic communication’ as the dialogue between nurse and patient to achieve goals tailored exclusively to the patients needs. In this case dialogue is used by Mr. Comer in the form of body language and noise to communicate his needs because of speech loss. Nelson-Jones (1990) states that facial expressions are an intrinsic way to express emotions and eye contact is one way to show interest. The avoidance in eye contact displayed by Mr. Comer showed his distinct lack of interest. Compounding these factors was his facial paralysis, which made it especially difficult for me to ascertain the exact nature of his feelings. The nurse must be the sender and more importantly the receiver of clear information. Patients with speech impairment or loss have a more difficult task sending the messages they want and are sometimes unsuccessful in making themselves understood. (Arnold Boggs 1995). It appeared to me that Mr. Comer’s cough was not only a physiological disorder caused by his condition, but a way for him to communicate, in this case, his displeasure. Critical analysis of this experience has pointed to the fact that I have inadequacies in my skills, to identify covert and overt clues provided by Mr. Comer to his needs. I had focussed too much on the presenting task to feed him, with my mind occupied on his safety due to the nature of his swallowing problems. I had not considered his other needs like his wishes or desires and I had not gathered enough personal information about him beforehand to know this (Davis Fallowfield 1991). I had been unsure about what to say or do to alleviate Mr. Comer’s apparent anxieties and had adopted what Watson Wilkinson (2001) describe as the blocking technique. By continuing my actions to carry on with the meal, I was cutting short the patients need to communicate a problem. I was influenced in this decision because I felt obliged to be seen to reduce his anxieties, knowing my actions would be judged by an audience of other care workers and patients on the ward. I did not respond efficiently to reduce his distress and this pressure led me to deal with the situation inadequately and for that I felt guilty (Nichols 1993). I should have allowed more time to understand what Mr. Comer was thinking and feeling by putting words to his vocal sounds and actions. I could have shown more empathy in the form of my own body language to promote active listening (Egan 2002) and not worried about other peoples views on my decisions and beliefs to act in a way I felt comfortable with and thought was best for my patient. Gould (1990) cited by Chauhan Long (2000) have suggested that â€Å"many of the non verbal behaviours we use to reassure patients, such as close proximity, prolonged eye contact, clarification, validation, touch, a calm and soothing voice, the effective use of questions, paraphrasing and reflecting thoughts and feelings and summarising are all sub skills with the totality of empathy†. There is an abundance of information about communication, especially for nurses because it is considered by many as the core component to all nursing actions and interventions. Lack of effective communication is a problem that still exists because the learning process that leads to a skilled level of ability may take years of experience to develop (Watson and Wilkinson 2001). It has been quite difficult for me to admit my inadequacies in communication, but Rowe (1999) explains that a person must identify their weaknesses as an initiative for becoming self-aware. Only with acceptance of ones self, can a person begin to acknowledge another persons uniqueness and build upon this to provide holistic care.

The Role of American NGOs in the Regulation of Cruise Ship Pollution Es

The Role of American NGOs in the Regulation of Cruise Ship Pollution Each year, thousands of tons of pollution are generated on cruise ships and dumped into the world’s oceans. This pollution threatens the marine environment, the cruise ship industry, and the people who depend on a healthy ocean. Neither historical nor current international oceanic regimes provide comprehensive regulation on cruise ship pollution. To address the threats posed by limited oceanic pollution regulation in American and international waters, several American nongovernmental organizations have pursued diverse tactics to generate government, industry, and consumer response. To the extent that NGOs are able to influence policy, the actions of these groups challenges the realist notion that non-state actors have little influence on policy. A case study of three prominent American NGOs demonstrates how different strategies can be implemented to influence oceanic policy. The Bluewater Network, Oceana, and Conservation International have tried to abate pollution from cruise ships by either lobbying the government for improved policies, generating public awareness of the cruise ship pollution issue, or working with the cruise ship industry to implement stronger pollution controls. These actors have responded to the weakness in the oceanic policy regime. Although cruise ship pollution remains a major threat to national and international waters, American NGOs have been successful in generating increased awareness of the issue and have been able encourage policies that will make cruises more sustainable for both the environment and the industry (Oceana). The Development of Oceanic Policy International agreements have established the United St... ... The cruise ship pollution campaign has been strengthened by the cooperation among organizations that the Bluewater Network petition facilitated. Heightened public awareness, engendered by NGO campaigns, has pressured the U.S. government and the cruise ship industry to respond. If policy changes, such as those presented in the Clean Cruise Ships Act of 2004, occur, the activities of Conservation International may allow the cruise ship industry to comply with environmental regulations while maintaining high profits. The confluence of each NGO’s actions may provide the means necessary for a strong domestic ocean regime. In the absence of international cooperation, a strong American ocean policy is an important step in safeguarding the world’s oceans. Various strategies have allowed NGOs to highlight cruise ship pollution as an issue that can not longer be ignored.

Being Cheyenne

Waking in the dark, the sun not yet lighting the where the land meets the sky, I build the fire and begin my work for the day. I step in line beside my sister in law as we walk the path down to the stream to begin collecting water for the day. Each day since we have come here the dirt along the path has become smoother, beaten down by the repetition of our feet as we women come daily to draw from the water source. When we once more move on to follow the herds as the season changes, the smooth expanse will be left behind to be swallowed once more by nature. It has been our path for a small time but has always belonged to nature, who will reclaim it once we are gone. Though each day we walk together, the early morning walk to the stream is largely silent as we each think of the daily tasks ahead. This morning, I quickly run over my tasks for the day, allowing extra time to help prepare the buffalo if the hunt is successful.A successful hunt means more work today but peace of mind as wel l since I know we will not go without. For now though, my task is simple – to gather the water as I do every morning. The first thing I do this morning, as I come upon the stream is to step out of the worn moccasins that will encase my feet for the rest of the day and let the cool water rush between my toes. It is here that I watch the sun begin to color the sky, changing from dark to day.Between the water needed for cooking and cleaning, there will be several trips this morning to the stream. On the third trip to the stream, I hear the splashing of the boys bathing and playing at being warriors and begin to hurry. My sister-in-law is no longer by my side but back beside her own fire, preparing the morning meal. I hurry up the path noticing that the camp is now fully awake, as my two boys rush past, impatient for a full belly before going to tend to the horses.

Cognitive Psychology - 863 Words

Cognitive Psychology Brian Shrum Psy/360 April 11, 2013 Dr. Turner Cognitive Psychology Hermann Ebbinghaus said, â€Å"Psychology has a long past, yet its real history is short† (Goodwin, 2008, p. 28). He was referring to the belief that while the study of human thought, emotion, and behavior is firmly entrenched in philosophy, psychology as its own discipline has only been around a short time. During this short time, different branches of psychology have come out, one of them is cognitive psychology, which is only roughly 50 years old. Cognitive psychology expands upon other fields of psychology to further reveal why human beings act in the way they do. This paper will define cognitive psychology, explore key milestones in its†¦show more content†¦The second, and most destructive shortcoming for behaviorism, was that it did not observe, nor could it explain, human language, or intrinsic drives (Willingham, 2007). From these short comings, it became evident that parts of the human psyche had to be studied, which is where cognitive psychology began t o form. However, this shortcoming has not been the only development to help cognitive psychology become what it is. The metaphor comparing the human mind to a computer was a big leap for cognitive psychology. It allowed new abstract ideas to formulate on how the human brain works like an information processing center (Willingham, 2007). The basic break down of this is sensory input gives way to processing, and from processing a behavior is chosen and performed. This behavior could be internal or external dependant on what the input necessitates. For instance the computer currently being used to write this paper is receiving input from the keyboard. This information is translated as a bunch of zeroes and ones, which are then output to the monitor in the form of the letters being typed on the keyboard. Combine this metaphorical approach with the onset of technology, specifically neuroscience, and cognitive psychology continues to evolve. Neuroscience has tremendously helped cognitive psychology evolve.
